FourTrack Record Music Anywhere with your iPhone

FourTrack is a songwriting and practice tool for singers, guitarists, pianists, and other musicians who want to record songs on their iPhone or iPod Touch (2nd gen).

Recording with FourTrack consists of just three simple steps:

Many applications have attempted to take advantage of the iPhones music making capabilities, but none so much as FourTrack by Sonoma Wire Works. FourTrack is essentially a four track mixer for your iPhone with a built in recorder that utilizes the microphone on the iPhone. For those technophobes who might not be familiar with what a four track mixer is, it’s basically a device that is used to record musical instruments or vocals on four separate tracks. This means that 4 tracks of audio can be playing at the same time in a mix. Each track has an “arm” which is used for recording and occasionally altering the volume for said track.

As I’ve mentioned before, FourTrack utilizes the iPhone microphone to record your choice of musical instrument. FourTrack also encourages the use of third party microphones to get decent recording quality. Despite the recommendations, I’ve found that the iPhone internal microphone works fine, and there is no need for a third party one, unless you are an iPod Touch user.

Sonoma Wire Works state that:

FourTrack is a songwriting and practice tool for singers, guitar players, piano players, and other musicians who want to capture musical ideas and record songs on their iPhone.

There are several features that ensure that FourTrack is as convenient as possible so as to not let an idea slip while you fiddle around for your iPhone. The track length is unlimited, and editable so any mistakes can be swiftly removed with the stroke of a finger. Songs can be saved to the iPhone hard drive and can be re-edited later using latency compensation and calibrated faders to ensure that your track is as perfect as you want it to be. One of my main concerns when purchasing this app was whether the mic would knock points off with it’s unpredictable volumes, but even that has been tended to. The microphone level is monitored and displayed so you can see if you’re playing too loud or too quietly, which is great for vocalists especially. After you have recorded your masterpiece, you can either choose to save it to your iPhone, or conveniently sync it to your PC

or Mac via WiFi.

Overall, I would say that this app is worth the price of $9.99, considering how sophisticated the recording technology is. This is a great app for professional musicians on-the-go,  or even budding musicians wishing to record for practice. This application is very versatile and caters for any needs a musician could want and I would definitely recommend it.
